Addition is a binary operation.  Two numbers are combined to create a unique number.

Addend + Addend = Sum

Closure Property for Whole-Number Addition:  The sum of any two whole numbers is a whole number.

Commutative Property of Whole-Number Addition:  a + b = b + a

Associative Property of Whole-Number Addition:  (a + b) + c = a + (b + c)

Identity Property of Whole-Number Addition:  a + 0 = a = 0 + a
